CoP Meeting: Reflecting, Collaborating with another CoP

We did an assessment of our progress so far... we decided we need to "pony up" on actually recording data and evaluating the progress of our students. We reflected on our year-long learning on a personal level, in our CoP group, and with another CoP group. We also determined that we need to collect anecdotal data on how the tech use is improving students' value of education in general.

Another concern presented was cultural proficiency. We read a preface which discussed the need for educators to change our attitudes, beliefs, behaviors and even ourselves in regards to recognizing cultural influences our students bring into the classroom. These influences may enhance or cloud our daily instruction.

We met with Daniele, Janet, Cathy, & Sandy (see D, J & C in the pic) from the group "Using the Internet in the Classroom," who shared several great websites for using tech. Glogster, LoudLit, Mrs. P's Storyline site, and VoiceThread are sites they're using in their 4th, 6th and HS classes to actively engage their students.

Glogster EDU Premium is a collaborative online learning platform for teachers and students to express their creativity, knowledge, ideas and skills in the classroom.

LoudLit has classic literature read out loud. LoudLit.org is committed to delivering public domain literature paired with high quality audio performances. They pair together great literature and accompanying audio.

Mrs. P's Storyline site is an award-winning FREE interactive digital storybook destination. Classic children’s stories are brought to life by TV star Kathy Kinney as Mrs. P.

A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam).

Melvin also recommends downloading Fraction Math from the App Store.

Next meeting: Portable #20 at Jellick on January 13th, 3:30 PM; then Feb. 7th at Hurley in Melvin's room (215); Feb. 28th at Shelyn in room A-10; then March 28th back at Jellick.
