Big group meeting: iPods & Internet in the Classroom Groups

Nancy shared Puppet Pals HD as a great app for ELD students which take characters and settings, records voices, etc. Doceri, a $50 adaptor, turns the iPad into a smartboard, which projects onto your video projector. eClicker is another clicker/student response program to use in the classroom with iPods. Skip has used PollsEverywhere with reasonable success for 1-trick-pony questions.

Melvin expressed a concern about making a big purchase in iPads, with the chance that new models may be coming out momentarily. Makes sense! There are rumors that the new iPad is going to shoot video as well.

He also discovered that using Pizza Math, he's up to 50% of his students passing the fraction benchmark (found on Edusoft under benchmarks).

Skip shared an idea he purloined from John Staumont's email with lots of links for iPods. It's a way to create a Smart Playlist to manage audio content on a set of iPods, which can be a nightmare with changing units in your books which are available in mp3 format. Check out the how-to here.

Also: If you're trying to dump video to an iPod or iPad, you'll need to convert the file to mp4. A Mac (and Windows) program for video conversion is MPEG Streamclip, which is free. Download it here. Skip can help you if need tips getting started.

Museum Box is a *great* online tool for putting together projects, esp. 6th graders. Check out the YouTube video here. It's all free; just register your school, and it takes about a week to get your account going.

Freddy Fraction is a great app for teaching students the process of converting fractions to decimals.
